PERU SO FAR (Cusco, 23.04.2005)

From Bolivia we crossed into Peru in the Lake Titicaca region. We didn't stop at the Peruvian side of the lake, we went right on to Arequipa. We arrived quite late at night, took a taxi from the bus terminal to the centre, which dropped us of at a really cheap hotel. All quite uncomplicated. Unfortunately, there was something like a private drinking party of some other hotel guests going on. A bunch of young, typical backpackers lingering over some bottles of Rum, one American guy with a really annoying loud nasal voice telling his life story. Fortunately, every story has its end and there is a moment when even the young wild ones had enough to drink, and the little gathering dispersed and we finally could sleep. The next day we explored Arequipa, which is a pleasent city with a nice plaza, in front of it a church and behind the church towering the huge snowcapped conical mountain El Misti. It looks fantastic! In the evening we found a good bar with an inviting Happy Hour offer, so we allowed ourselfes a couple of Cuba Libres until our hour was quite happy indeed... The next day we even managed to get up early enough to go to the bus terminal to catch the 11:45 AM bus to Chivay. The three hours ride took us through beautiful mountaineous scenery, up and up and further up and then dropped quite impressively down to Chivay, a small town in the beginning of the Canyon de Colca. We stayed in Chivay a couple of days, made a trip further to the canyon, which is the second deepest of the world. It's all quite impressive and beautiful. And I still love to see the simple mountain life of the people in the Andes. They live with so little. And here in this region we saw fantastic terracing and watering systems which enables the peope to plant all sorts of things.

From Chivay we went back to Aequipa and from there directly on to Cusco, on a freezing 10 hours night bus. Frozen stiff we arrived at around 6 AM. Cusco is one of the longest inhabited towns on the continent, founded in the 11th century by the Incas. From here you can visit the lost Inca city Machu Picchu, which draws a ridiculous number of tourists each year.

The city Cusco has a very nice centre, with old buildings and many narrow streets, and some really nice churches. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, souvenir shops and tour agencies. You can't walk for two minutes without seven people wanting to sell you something. It can get annoying, but it is still far more peaceful here than what we've experienced in some places in S.E. Asia.

TOURISTEN (Cusco, 23.04.2005)
