TURPAN
Turpan ist klein, heiss und staubig. Es liegt unterhalb des Meeresspiegels,
soll der zweit niedrigste Ort der Welt sein, ca. sechs Stunden von Urumqi.
Rundherum ist eine riesige Wueste, und wie gesagt, es ist wirklich sehr,
sehr heiss.
Der alte Teil des Ortes ist fantastisch: niedrige Lehmhaeuser um schattige
Innenhoefe gebaut, schmale staubige Gassen, hoelzerne Wagen von Eseln
gezogen... Ein Blick in einen solchen huebschen Innenhof zeigt das
gemuetliche und einfache Leben der Uighurs. Man kann sich gut vorstellen,
dass es hier vor 100 Jahren aehnlich ausgesehen hat. Wandert man etwas
herum, entdeckt man zwischendurch mal eine simple, kleine Moschee, hinter
dem stolzen farbigen Eingang sieht man die aelteren Herren ihren Gebeten
nachgehen.
In Turpan und Umgebung dreht sich alles um Trauben. Jeder scheint im
Traubenbusiness zu sein. Unzaehlige Reben geben einen schoenen Kontrast zu
dem hellbraunem Lehm der Haeuser. Esel ziehen Wagen vollgeladen mit Koerben
voller Trauben hin und her, Maenner und Frauen in den Reben am Trauben
pfluecken. Es wirkt alles sehr tuechtig und geschaeftig. Und die Trauben
sind gut, so suess und kernenfrei！Natuerlich wird hier auch Wein
produziert.
Wir besuchten die Ruinen zweier ehemaligen Wuestenstaedten in der Umgebung.
Die eine ist etwas besser erhalten als die andere, aber man kann sich
trotzdem gut vorstellen wie hier einmal das Leben pulsierte, als der Handel
auf der Seidenstrasse bluehte, wie Haendler von nah und fern ihre Ware mit
Kamelkaravanen durch die Wueste transportierten. Wie gerne wuerde ich mich
kurz in diese Zeit zurueck katapultieren.

KASHGAR
From Urumqi it took us a long 28 hours by bus to Kashgar. The name of this
city always sounded so exotic to me, so oriental. Wandering around the old
town is like stepping into another world in another time: narrow streets,
simple adobe houses with their beautiful courtyards, streets full of
hammering metalworkers, food stands selling mutton kebabs and dumplings,
chickpeas with carrots and our beloved bread. The market streets have a
bustling atmosphere, selling everything from delicious fruits to knives,
carpets and silks. There is an ethnic mix of Uighurs, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Uzbeks
and Han Chinese. Zou see many women with headscarfs, some even hide their
whole faces behind brown gauze, which is a strange sight at first. The plaza
in front of the Id Kah Mosque is a great place for people watching and
taking in the exotic atmosphere.

LAKE KARAKUL
On the way from Kashgar to Pakistan the road passes the beautiful Karakul
Lake. It took us around six hours to get there by bus. When we got off the
bus we were greeted by some young guys who told us we could overnight in
their yurt in their Kyrgyz village. We thought this was a good idea and
followed them. The village turned out to consist of one single yurt, but
beautifully located in a secluded spot right next to the lake. We were
greeted by the mother of the family and the teenaged daughter. After
settling the price for the night and one meal we dumped our stuff and
started exploring the wonderful surroundings. We wanted to walk around the
lake, they told us it would take around three hours. It is such a nice
sight: the lake, its colour changing from turquoise to deep blue to a
silvery grey depending on the angle you look at it, and the snowy peaks
towering behind it. It was a very pleasant walk, we encountered herds of
yaks, horses and even camels. In the evening and the next morning we sat
around in or outside the yurt, watching the family going about their daily
business and spoiling the sweet little girl with biscuits. The night wasn?t
as cold and uncomfortable as we first thought it would be, they covered the
floor with countless blankets and we each got two thick ones to cover
ourselves, it was quite comfortable and cozy. All in all there were nine
people sleeping in the yurt, which also helped keep it nice and warm.
